Ever wonder why some people keep trying and never give up? It’s because they have perseverance. Perseverance is the ability to keep doing something despite challenges. My dad started his own business back in the ’70s. He had a passion for HVAC and helping others. Running a business and having family members work in the company had its own set of unique challenges, but he never gave up, and he never lost his love for the work.
What drives this grit and perseverance? What makes some people keep trying harder than others? I believe it is something tied to our values; something that deep down inside us motivates us intrinsically. I believe that is what drove my dad’s perseverance and grit. He had a passion for the work he was doing and wanted to use that to help others.
People who develop perseverance can weather storms and man the ship when things look rough. They don’t give up on their ideas even when others tell them they are crazy, or it won’t work, and they can bounce back after a setback. They are resilient and have a positive can-do, get it done attitude. Employers want to hire individuals with this skillset in their tool belt. Not only is perseverance one of several desired skills employers seek, but it also serves you well in life overall. We all know that life can be like a roller coaster with its ups and downs. Perseverance helps you get through the inevitable downs.
Success Magazine shares “9 Ways You Can Improve Your Perseverance Skills.” My personal favorites are numbers 1 and 9. Don’t be afraid to fail and Remember your ‘why.’ Shifting from thinking of failure as wrong to think about it from a positive point of view helps make it easier to try new things knowing that you are going to learn from them regardless of the outcome. And always keep in mind your why. Your why can be one of the many reasons you get out of bed every day. It’s the difference you want to make in the world. What is going to be your approach to improving perseverance?
Stay curious and have a great week!
